Whereas the solar principle leads to self-esteem and the construction of a personal identity, Uranus invites identification with the cosmic will and thereby awakens the self to a transpersonal, collective identity. If unintegrated, aspects between these two planets can indicate an unstable self-image, schizoid disorder, and perverse rebelliousness -- or, resistance to change and compensatory egotism. If well integrated, however, these same aspects symbolize a capacity for conscious evolution, recognition of impermanence, and emancipation from the dictates of pride. Full integration enables one to be led by a higher intelligence for the sake of the collective good.

A Great Book!

This is a great book! Dr. Perry is particularly thorough and insightful in discussing the psychology of the Leo-Aquarius and Sun-Uranus relationships. He draws from his experience as a therapist to explain the psychological roots, development, and maturation of Leo-Aquarius themes but also draws from the Buddhist and Hindu traditions to explain how these signs relate to the urge toward spiritual evolution. He includes a brilliant discussion on Ted Kaczinsky's (the Unibomber) Sun-Uranus relationship and diagnosis of Schizoid Disorder. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the deeper psychological meaning of celestial correspondences to this astrological axis. I bought this book as Transiting Uranus was conjunct my Secondary Progressed Moon in Aries, 8th House and both trine natal Pluto in Leo, 12th House. It was the best book to read for this long Uranus-Leo event in my life! Thank you!

Good book. Helped immeasurably by the author's training in psychology, and I felt he truly grasped the mechanics of the Leo and Aquarius relationship. I myself have Uranus conjunct my nadir, and opposite my sun, with my 1st house in Leo, forming something like a T-square. This book provided really great insights into my own revolutionary, trickster traits and my "royal" sense of self-expression. Even if you've no personal connection to these aspects, if you have an interest in doing astrology readings at all, I feel this would be a good addition to the library and grasping the unique problems people face when they have significant Uranus-Sun aspects. I've seen numerous astrologers who don't emphasize the outer planets, but their presence in the personal life of natives can be profound, particularly in hard aspects. Well worth the read.

About the Author
Henry Strobel is the author-publisher of seven books on violin, viola, and cello making, repair, and adjustment, which are used worldwide. He recently published a video Watch Me Make a Cello, Step by Step. Born in Indiana in 1936, he had a first career as an electronic design engineer, and was one of the founders of Digital Telephone Systems, Inc. in California, which manufactured transmission and switching equipment. He served in the US Air Force service in Scotland as a communications officer. He studied violin as a schoolboy, made his first over thirty years ago, and has had his own violin business for twenty years, fifteen at his current full service violin shop in Oregon, where, with his wife and sons, he also makes violins, violas, and cellos, and writes books.

Preface to the Third Edition

The second edition had only minor revisions, and this third edition is unchanged except for the important addition of data and drawings for making an artist class "7/8" size cello. Happily the exhaustion of the second edition coincided with the publication of my first video which illustrated the making of such a cello. Looking at the Afterword in this book, I wonder at the changes, the continued growth in violin making and in sales of these books, the ever increasing use of computers, E-mail, doing business on the internet, and our inevitable introduction of a video. But we still make and like our fiddles the old way.

Addendum for a 7/8 Size Cello

Violin Making Live! or Watch Me Make a Cello, Step by Step, is Henry Strobel's first video. In it he demonstrates and explains the violin maker's procedures and processes (common to violin, viola, and cello), using a cello as the example. Fortunately the cello model, adapted from a 7/8 size J. B. Guadagnini, made a wonderful sounding instrument in a size just right for a neglected minority of cellists. The documentation to reproduce it, lacking in the video, is published as an addendum to this Third Edition of Cello Making, Step by Step at the center of the book, just above the 4/4 size drawings. Readily removable for use, its pages are numbered A1 through A12, leaving the pagination of the basic book unchanged for reference reasons.

In preparation for building a cello, I have successfully built a violin using Mr. Strobel's "Violin Making Step by Step". I have reasonalble amatuer woodworking skills and simple but adequate tools and space. I also reviewed all of the reasonably obtainable sources on violin constuction and found Mr. Strobel's books to be more helpful than most. The author recommends the first time builder of a cello to first build a viloin in his preface to "Cello Making" and I heartily agree. The price of the wood is much cheaper and techniques can be mastered on a smaller scale. The price of his book is about that of one cello lesson and it will last a lot longer.

Must Have for Those Who Fix String Instruments

My husband is the woodworker in our family; our daughter plays the cello and also is a public school string teacher. Last year she had a cello in bad need of repair but her school budget didn't have the money to repair it, so. . .she brought it home to Dad and they got it fixed. Unfortunately, they had to completely take it apart to fix the problems but didn't have all the supplies to put it back together. Fortunately she could afford to pay someone else to glue it back together. This sparked a seed in my husband to want to learn more about how to work on a cello and we finally found it in this book. NOT FOR BEGINNERS, it does have all the information you need to work on a cello but we recommend also getting the "Violin Making" book as the two work hand-in-hand.

About the Author
Jan Roberts-Breslin is an Associate Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in studio and field video production and media arts. She is also the Graduate Program Director at Emerson, responsible for coordinating the graduate curriculum and advising over a hundred masters students. She taught previously at Temple University and at Seton Hall University. For the past sixteen years, Jan has been a media artist and freelance producer/director of film, video, and interactive multimedia projects, including a feature film, documentaries, experimental work, and corporate productions. She has a Master of Fine Arts degree in Film and Video Production from Temple University.

Making complex issues clear

This book has been a real life saver for me on my first semester at graduate school. The other media books I had to read were overwhelming with never ending details and jargon language. Roberts- Breslin's book explains everything plainly from start to finish. She has an uncanny ability to simplify extremely complex matters. Even with no prior knowledge of the technical aspects of media making I now have a solid foundation.

The main terms are bolded, and also listed in the end so you can read the book beginning to end or just look up specific topics. The attached CD is a great addition as it visually illustrates concepts that are difficult to explain verbally, such as the different camera movement (What is the difference between the pan and truck movement?) or the phi phenomenon.

Another great thing about the book is the practical tips it gives to a beginner. Logging all my footage, for example, would have never accrued to me, but it made editing so much more manageable and must have saved me hours upon hours.

Great foundation for film students

This book reads as a bit dated, but the foundations you learn from it are terrific. I used this as a textbook in a film production class and learned quite a lot. We were assigned certain chapters but I read the whole book on my own because I learned so much from it. If you're new to film and media production definitely pick up this book. I still keep it on my shelf and reference it every once in a while.
