H. B. Broome, come back

So every few years I take H. B. Broome's explosive debut novel off the shelf, dust it off, and have a hell of a time all over again reading it. And The Meanest Man in West Texas (1985) is compulsive reading. This was nominated as the best first Western novel by the Western Writers of America, and, presumably, those cats carry formidable cachet in these matters.

I don't think you have it in you to pass up on this book once you've eyeballed its opening sentence: "I wet my pants just before I shot and killed the second meanest man in West Texas." 17-year-old Tom English had nary a clue that he was heller with a gun when he walked into that dingy saloon and ended up taking out him what's universally hailed as the second meanest man in West Texas.

In the aftermath, a stunned Tom English knew he'd been real lucky, what with his old, rusted single-action .44. and the wet behind his ears and now the embarassing stain on his pants. It's the latter bit that propels Tom to a table so that as the fled onlookers cautiously wander back into the saloon, what they see is Tom calmly drinking whiskey whilst a corpse lay sprawled by him.

Just like that, young Tom English has got a rep as a nasty gunslinger. And even though he wants no part of this notoriety, it can't be helped that he's now become a target for all them glory-seeking pistol packers itching to test him. And I guess it's inevitable that once you put down the second meanest man in West Texas, won't be long before THE meanest man in West Texas comes gunnin' for you. Damn straight, you better practice on that fast draw, Tom English!

So I don't know whatever happened to H.B. Broome that he's stopped writing. Based on The Meanest Man in West Texas, he showed massive promise and a potential to be on par with Louis L'Amour, Zane Grey, and Max Brand. His writing is spare and crisp. The plot, on the surface, is a rehashed one. But keep on reading and one dichotomy persists, that this is a lean shoot-'em-up that has a sweep to it and an elegiac feel to it. Tom English's story spans many years. Broome is a confident storyteller. His prose is straightforward but vivid. Broome demonstrates a deftness with characterization. His action sequences leap off the pages. Tom English is a compelling character. He's a man whose sense of morality wars with his darker impulses. Tom is sensible and most of the time peaceable. But there's undeniably a part of him that thrills to the hunt, that takes pride in his knack with the gun. All Tom wants is to settle down and raise a family. His reputation won't let him. This book is well-paced, and each time Tom's reputation catches up to him, the pages blister. I really, really like this book, and it won't be long again before I take it down off the shelf. Meanwhile, I'm kicking myself for just now glomming on that Broome has written at least four sequels: Gunfighters (1987), Man Who Had Enemies (A Doubleday D Western Book) (1988), VIOLENT SUMMER (A Double D Western) (1990), and DARK WINTER (A Double D Western) (1991). Damn you, H.B. Broome, for being so obscure and hard to find. It's super-annoying. And write more books!

Good Book

I used the first edition of this book during my undergraduate studies. The book is a good introduction to power system protection, but it's doesn't provide in depth details about the topics covered. The changes made to the 3rd edition are relatively small compare to the 2nd edition with some information added about wide area measurement and PMUs. The book is a good introduction for power system relaying but if you are looking for a reference book I highly recommend the book by P.M. Anderson "Power system protection".

Good book for protection engineers

The hubby is a distribution engineer who's been involved in protection engineering projects and this book has enabled him to work with Relay & Substation engineers and helped him acquire the background for the what, why, and how of the projects. As for me, also a EE, I have picked up the book for study material for the PE and found it a little daunting -it is written as a textbook with worked-out examples, which helps follow the concepts. However, one minus in my view is that the book does not have numerical solutions in the back, which would certainly help in working through the problems at the end of the chapters. Unless you are either involved in relaying projects in your day job or you regularly discuss the problems with others who know relay engineering, it is difficult to learn the material from the book by yourself. This book is certainly for graduate students or senior students with a STRONG background in power systems engineering. Though a EE working in the power industry, I never took power courses in school and was able to learn the subject from other textbooks with enough discipline to sit down and do the problems -unfortunately, not so with this one.

Excellent overview of a slightly obscure subject

This is a fantastic and comprehensive overview of the systematic minerology of uranium and thorium minerals, including an overview of all the major ore deposits around the world. It is splendidly illustrated with pictures of almost every described species, and crystal structures where available.
Certainly a welcome addition to the limited library of books on radioactive minerals, admittedly a bit of an esoteric interest.

About the Author
Chris Juzwiak holds an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Los Angeles, and is ABD. He has taught college-level literature and composition for twenty-three years and is currently chair of the Developmental Composition Program at Glendale Community College. Under the auspices of grants from the Carnegie and Hewlett Foundations and the California Basic Skills Initiative, Chris has pioneered new pedagogical approaches to development composition instruction. He is coauthor of “Pedagogies of Visibility: The Full E-mersion and Beyond,” an article in the spring 2009 edition of New Directions for Community Colleges. In addition, Chris has presented his work at ISSOTL, the League for Innovation, ECCTYC, Strengthening Student Success, the California State Academic Senate, and the Carnegie and Hewlett Foundations. At Glendale College, he has received the John Craven Award for innovative composition instruction and in 2010, the Distinguished Faculty Award. His latest project, IMPACT (Incremental-Motivational Pedagogy, Assessment-Cycles Training), is a distillation of ten years of pedagogical research and innovation, and is now used in all the developmental composition classes at his college.

Misleading Description--Wrong Book

This is the Instructors Annotated Edition. There should be a wide white stripe running across the top of the book pictured in the advertisement. Note that it shows none. Also note that no where in the description does it tell you it's the Instructors Edition, and as such, it includes all the answers! It should be made known by the seller--in LARGE LETTERS! To me, this is false advertising. Amazon should NOT allow this company to do business here. I don't know if they are even aware of it, but they will be made aware of it by me. My friend also ordered the same book & received the useless Instructors Edition...just as I did. DO NOT PURCHASE THIS BOOK!!!
