About the Author
Dr. Liang C. Shen received the Ph. D. degree in applied physics from Harvard University in 1967. He then joined the faculty of the University of Houston in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He served as the Department Chairman from 1977 to 1981. Dr. Shen founded the Well Logging Laboratory in 1979. .He has published a textbook, more than 101 papers in technical journals and conferences. Dr. Shen received SPWLA Gold Medal for Technical achievement in 2001. Dr. Shen has been a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Houston since 2004.

Dr Jin Au Kong received a BS in 1962 from the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan, and an MS in 1962 from the National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu, Taiwan. He came to the United States in 1965 and obtained a PhD from Syracuse University, where he continued as a postdoctoral research engineer until 1969. He joined the MIT faculty in 1969, was the leader of the Research Laboratory for Electronics (RLE) Center for Electromagnetic Theory and Applications. Over the years, he also served as a consultant to the New York Port Authority, Raytheon, Hughes Aircraft, Lockheed Missiles and Space, and MIT's Lincoln Lab. He also served as a visiting scientist at the Lunar Science Institute in Houston, a visiting professor at the University of Houston, and a high-level consultant to the United Nations. He has published more than 30 books on electromagnetics and more than 700 research papers and book chapters. Dr. Kong passed away in March 2008.

Non-traditional ordering of chapters

I just completed a junior-level course which made use of this text. Although the topics are arranged differently than in similar textbooks, I found the explainations of EM concepts quite good. The main strength is getting right to Maxwell's equations in chapter two (--after all, that's what EM is all about, right?). Maxwell's equations are explained well and at an introductory level so that the reader is not overwhelmed. The main weakness is the very underdeveloped first chapter, "Complex Vectors" which is too brief and oversimplified for the subject matter at hand. The book also presents very informative and even entertaining asides on applications, such as "anti-glare headlights" (polarization), "tails of comets" (radiation pressure) and "microwave ovens" (penetration depth). Overall, a very good first EM book.

I would recommend this curriculum for anyone who wants a series that ...

I used this curriculum with a small group at my church and it was extremely powerful and it allowed the Holy Spirit to move and strengthen bonds of the men in our group. I would recommend this curriculum for anyone who wants a series that is geared towards men. Craig Groeschel does an excellent job of speaking to men as men. If I could give it more than 5 stars I would!

Great study for a men's group

Great study for a men's group. All of the guys really enjoyed it. We had a group of 5 or 6. If you have groups of more than 8, you may need to break into smaller groups to give everyone time to answer the questions during the discussion. The kit made it easy to host the group and lead the discussions.

Great starter for anybody interested in the Civil War

The American Civil War is not only an interesting and fascinating topic to study, but also a difficult one to get into. While many of us probably heard a little bit about the Civil War during highschool history classes through textbooks, we likely only remember that the Union won, the Confederacy lost and that slavery was abolished; that's the most important part teachers tell us, right?

However, the American War is a great book for any historians or Civil War buffs to learn the very base of the Civil War. Most books regarding the Civil War are too thick, too difficult and too boring for starters. The American War does not only read easily, but contains a wealth of information explained in a simple manner for ordinary people to understand. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn the basics of Civil War.

For college level students or adults who want to enter the realm of Civil War history, this will be a great base for their further studies.

An in-depth look at a comprehensible level

Very well written book on the American Civil War that not only presents the war itself but gives an in-depth look at the people, rich and poor, black and white, men and women, free and slave, American and Immigrant, and so on. It is different because it is written in such a way that I can use it even in the high schools. Brilliant collaboration and I look forward to the possibility of future works.

He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience later influenced the political thoughts and actions of such notable figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mahatma Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Thoreau is sometimes cited as an anarchist. Though Civil Disobedience seems to call for improving rather than abolishing government - "I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government" - the direction of this improvement points toward anarchism: "'That government is best which governs not at all;' and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have." Richard T. Drinnon partly blames Thoreau for the ambiguity, noting that Thoreau's "sly satire, his liking for wide margins for his writing, and his fondness for paradox provided ammunition for widely divergent interpretations of 'Civil Disobedience'."

About the Author

Henry David Thoreau was born in 1817 in Concord, Massachusetts. He spent time as a school teacher after attending Harvard College but was dismissed for his refusal to administer corporal punishment. In 1845, wanting to write his first book, he moved to Walden Pond and built his cabin on land owned by Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was during his time at Walden that Thoreau was imprisoned briefly for not paying taxes; this experience became the basis for his well-known essay "Civil Disobedience." He died of tuberculosis in 1862 at the age of 44.

Thoreau is Wonderful

I must admit that I wouldn't have read a book about the lore of apples in the 1800s had it not been rather short in length and written by the amazing Henry Thoreau. But as it was, it contained the unmatched descriptions and fervent passion that is so evident in all of Thoreau's writings. I wouldn't recommend this work to anybody that isn't a follower of Thoreau, but for those of us that are, this writing about apples is a quick easy read that inspires you to take a stroll outside with an apple in your hand.

very interesting

This book might not be for everyone. It was the first of Thoreau that I have read, and might seem a bit "plodding" to some readers. However, I find his exploration of wild apples, their origin, and how they spread across the country to be quite interesting. Also, his appraisal of the flavors of wild apples compared with our cultivated species reminded me that what we find in our groceries is often just not the same as the flavors of plants from the wild or from our own gardens. And enjoyable read for a winter's evening.

foundation of Rome. This fruit symbolizes
peace as does the olive in an olive branch.

This perfect fruit was mentioned by Homer
and Herodotus. Pliny calls apples by the
name urbaniores. This wonderful fruit first
surfaces the beginning of August and begins
to fade toward the end of November as the
winter quickly approaches.

Thoreau's book is a treasure chest of pertinent
information about the apple and its literary
and historical significance.
