I want to give it a perfect rating but I can't

Make no mistake, this book is an excellent compendium to the Ghostbusters universe. It is a treasure trove of information. Initially, when I pre-ordered, I was under the assumption it would cover primarily the first movie. Nothing could be further from the truth. I have yet to sit down and read it (it's over 200 pages and hard bound) but here is what you can expect

1. Foreward by Dan Akroyd/Introduction by Ivan Reitman.
2. Complete overview of the original (original sketches/concept art of the baddies, storyboards, film shots you've never seen before, matte paintings, Ecto 1 illustrations., creature costumes and makeup, movie posters
3. Complete overview of the sequel (more of what you would expect in part except a lot more story book art and schematics).
3. Overview of the Real Ghostbusters, Extreme Ghostbusters, Ghostbuster Video Games, Ghostbuster Comics, Ghostbuster Merchandise

This is enough to make any hard core fan happy.

So what ruined this from being a 5 star rating from me: The extras.

Scattered throughout the book are film cells, business cards, sketches and artwork, storyboards, etc..

They are a welcome addition, but instead of including it in its own separate section, they are glued to the pages. The glue mostly comes off but it leaves an oily residue on the pages where it originally resided. I guess as a trade off you could not remove it, but then it's obstructing you from reading what's underneath it. I hope if they ever come out with a second printing they address is small nuisance to an otherwise perfect tabletop piece.

It has a wealth of content for fans

[[VIDEOID:bea8483745c9c32b12c177c54454f40]]Although I can't remember when was the first time I watched Ghostbusters as I was only three when the film came out. I must have caught one of those reruns. But I still remember that I was so fascinated by the film, the visuals and concept. I was also hooked on playing the Ghostbusters games when it came out on the SEGA system. The idea of ghosts running around and there are actually people who would go around catching these ghosts just seems wildly imaginative for me.

Going through this book brings back the sense of wonder and good memories of the first time I watched the films.

This 224-page hardcover is published by Insight Editions. The publisher has designed the book like a scrapbook with several removable items, such as the Ghostbuster name card, a questionnaire for those who watch the preview, booklet of storyboards, schematics of props, a transparent sheet with labels overlayed onto the slime blower tank prop, and other notes.

The removable items are a nice touch but they could have just been printed on the actual pages. They are sticked onto the pages and to read the content beneath you have to remove or push them away. Nice but not really necessary.

The book's divided into three parts, the first two parts cover the two films and the last part looks at the expanded universe.

There's a wealth of content in the form of lots of wonderful set photography, artworks and a detailed writeup into the making of the two films. It's a very satisfying read, especially when it comes to understanding how they actually create the ghosts, props and visual effects to make everything look believable. My favourite bits are for Slimer and Stay Puff marshmallow man who are my favourite characters. LOL. There are also lots of other ghosts featured, and the actors who have to wear the ghost suits.

The famous and iconic Ghostbusters car is also featured, of course. There's the original from the first film and the modified version in the second.

The last part for the expanded universe talks about the video games, toys, comics, animation and other merchandise. I don't follow Ghostbusters except for their films and that particular one game I played, so this section has a lot of things I'm seeing for the first time.

This really is a fantastic book for the fans.

Highly recommended.

An amazing book. The only thing missing seems to be a chapter on the Live Stage Show and Theme Park Presence from Universal Studios Florida. Otherwise, this book is a MUST HAVE for any Ghostbuster fan! I'll be ordered a second to leave in the shrink wrap, because I promise you I will wear the first copy out from pouring over it!

About the Author
Jonathan Rowson became Scotland's third grandmaster in late 1999, within months of graduating from Oxford University. He was runner-up in the 1997 European Junior Championship, Scottish Champion in 1999 and winner of the Canadian Open in 2000. I am currently rated 1860 uscf and over the last year my rating has increased from 1490. This book was instrumental. After playing chess for 10+ years I had no idea why I couldn't seem to play better. In nearly every game, I would see the correct move, discard it and play an obviously weaker move I KNEW was bad. Strong experts and masters would tell me after analyzing with them that I didn't need more chess books or a coach, what I needed was a psychiatrist. In comes Seven Deadly Chess Sins. My results since my purchase have been excellent. The last tournament I played in I defeated 3 1900+ players and drew a 2000+. This book will not teach you how to play chess, generate plans, or discuss the pros and cons of Na6 in the King's Indian. It will help you understand yourself and the struggle that typifies chess. This is exactly what I needed. By allowing me to eliminate my mental mistakes and play chess I was capable of, my results and playing strength have increased.

If you want books to make you a "better" player buy a Silman or Dvoretsky. If you are like me and already own these, and have read them and want to understand why you still play moves you know are wrong this is your book. His ideas are abstract, and sometimes hard to understand but the time invested pondering what Rowson is trying to say will help you understand your chess better. This book also reminded me through stories and anecdotes why I love chess.

In my opinion, if you are serious about your chess, you should own this book.

Real chess mind-expansion.

One of the most enjoyable and thought provoking chess books I have ever read, and certainly one of the few that, if I was forced to give up most of my collection, would remain with me.

This book is not for all chess players. It is not a book about tactics, combinations, opening, middle-game or end-game strategy. It is also not a book containing analysis of "famous" games. This book re-examines the intangible and cloudy thought process that the player goes through during a match, and proposes a new methodology ("approach" may be a better word) for "thinking" and "feeling" by identifying what the author considers the major mental "traps" of the chess player (hence the title "The Seven Deadly Chess Sins"). It is more philosophical and abstract in nature and is not really designed to improve your chess from a technical perspective. It does however, in great detail, show you how to re-evaluate how to "think" about chess. And in that sense this book is a delightful rarity and extremely valuable.

What are the seven deadly sins? "Thinking", (yes, Rowson tells us you can think too much in chess!), "Blinking", "Wanting", "Materialism", "Egosim", "Perfectionism", and "Looseness". In a nutshell, Rowson explains that emotion is much more involved in our chess thinking than we would care to admit, and that emotion can manifest itself in these various "sins" without us ever realizing or caring to acknowledge it.

The author has a great writing style that exudes his love for the game, that is one of the books biggest appeals. Perhaps it is his Scottish lineage which makes for some interesting quips, like this one: "Black may point to them and say `Look! Weak pawns: doubled and isolated!' But that is a bit like pointing to a mole on Cindy Crawford's face and saying `Look! Black spot; obvious and protruding!' As with any face, you miss much if you look at the parts seperate from the whole". The book is full of dry and humurous analogies like this one which make for a pleasurable read.

It is true, as one reviewer noted, that Rowson delves into subject matter which may not be his area of expertise, but so what? His insights are interesting and in most cases quite relevant. A few reviewers have also said, they liked the book but claimed it wouldn't help their chess. I submit that, just as with concentrated study of chess "theory", this book will help, but first you must open your mind to Rowson's theories and "practice" them as you would any other technique. Chess is not for the lazy and applying Rowson's ideas are no different.

There are hundreds of thousands of chess books available to choose from, but to me this one is a diamond in the rough. Simply put, if you love chess, you will love this book.

In typical John DiLeo fashion, this essay gives a clear and balanced evaluation of this movie with bits of humor thrown in as well. DilLeo succeeds in giving me a taste of this film, which I was not familiar with, and tempts me to take a look at it, something i probably would not have done before reading his piece. He is measured and realistic in his praise of the film's strengths as well as it's weaknesses. You can't help but be impressed with his knowledge of the period and genre and of the actors' work.

John DiLeo has a genius for guiding film fans towards forgotten, but excellent, films from Hollywood's Golden Age. And THE SEVENTH CROSS is definitely worth a look! Sterling cast, taut, suspenseful script, with an ending that will haunt you long past fadeout. And John's take, as always, is illuminating, incisive, and extremely enjoyable. Highly recommended!!

Another fine John DiLeo review, cross my heart

It's not easy to write a good, much less great movie review but John DiLeo does it time after time after time. His critique of THE SEVENTH CROSS was especially interesting to me because I not only think the film has Spencer Tracy's best dramatic performance (with the possible exception of his work in TEST PILOT) but because I really think CROSS itself is one of the great unsung World War II dramas, fascinating without ever becoming didactic (which hampered most World War II war dramas). One of the best things about DiLeo's reviews is that, as it is with the marvelous Danny Peary of GUIDE FOR THE FILM FANATIC fame, DiLeo makes you want to see the films he writes about. Even when I disagree with him (as in his review of 7TH CROSS; I, unlike him, don't think Agnes Moorehead overdoes it--it's more that her burst of energy seems overdone in this very understated film) I'm always swept along by his intelligent prose, knowledge of film and grammatical accuracy. (I'm a grammar snob.) In closing, see the movie and read more DiLeo reviews. You'll be glad you did both.

“Step right up, step right up! Professor Puck’s Fantastic Fairy Fair is in town. You will be amazed! You will be astonished! You won’t believe your eyes!”

Gurglefin the Gillman rubbed his webbed hands together with glee. He’d been waiting for this moment all year. Professor Puck’s fair was famous throughout Skylands. Everyone knew about it. The crazy games, the fin-raising rides, the strange sights. And the delicious smells. Oh, the smells. Doughnuts, popcorn and pretzels, toffee apples, cotton candy and gingerbread. Just thinking about it made his mouth water.

The only problem was choosing what to try first. Everywhere he turned, Gurglefin was presented with fresh treats and new opportunities for fun and excitement: Lights flashed, music played, and carnival folk called out, trying to entice him to their various stalls.

Then something caught his eye. There, behind the spiral slide and the Hook-a-Chompy game, stood a small, modest-looking red tent with a hand-painted sign hung over its dark entrance:

MADAME DESTINY:

FORTUNES TOLD,

FUTURES PREDICTED

There, thought Gurglefin. That’s the place to start. Madame Destiny can tell me what I’d enjoy most.

He waddled over excitedly, coins ready to cross Madame Destiny’s hand. There she was, sitting at the mouth of the tent, hunched over a crystal ball. She was wearing a dark crimson scarf around her head and a pink sequined veil across her face. As he drew nearer, Gurglefin slowed. There was something sinister about the old woman. Something not quite right. Maybe it was her piercing red eyes or the stubby fingers she waved over the crystal.

But, after coming this far, Gurglefin was in no mood to be a scaredy-catfish. This was just a harmless bit of fun, a harmless old woman. Nothing to be afraid of at all.

He crept closer to the stall and cleared his throat.

“Um, h-hello?” he croaked. “Madame Destiny?”

The hag didn’t look up. He tried again.

“Madame Destiny, I was wondering if you could—”

“What do you want?” the woman snapped, throwing her arms around the crystal ball, as if trying to hide it from view.

“J-just to have my fortune told,” stammered Gurglefin.

“And why should I do that?” she shrieked.

“Um, because you’re a fortune-teller?” he suggested, holding out two coins with his shaking hand.

The old woman growled, looked at the coins, and then looked at Gurglefin. Without warning, she shot out a hand, snatched the coins away, and snarled at the nervy Gillman.

“You want to know what the future holds?” she barked, fixing him with a wicked glare.

Gurglefin just nodded, wondering if he really did.

“Are you sure?” she teased, her veil shifting as if she was smiling underneath.

“I g-guess so . . .”

“Then I predict you’ll come to a STICKY END,” Madame Destiny screamed. “NOW SLING YER HOOK, FISHFACE!”

Gurglefin did just that. He quickly scampered out of the tent and into the crowd, not looking back. Madame Destiny had been so angry. But why? And what did she mean? A sticky end? He didn’t like the sound of that.

Gurglefin paused to catch his breath, his gills flapping and his heart racing. Perhaps coming to Professor Puck’s Fantastic Fairy Fair hadn’t been such a good idea after all.

Then he smelled something that made him all but forget his horrible experience with the fortune-teller.

“Cotton candy!”

Gurglefin followed his nose until he found a robot producing stick after stick laden with wonderfully sweet-smelling cotton candy from a door in its chest.

“Hello, sir,” the robot chirped happily. “I am Sweet-O-Tron 3000. Can I help you?”

“Cotton candy, please,” Gurglefin said eagerly, pressing a coin into the robot’s outstretched metal hand.

“Certainly, sir,” Sweet-O-Tron said, handing over the biggest stick of cotton candy Gurglefin had ever seen. “You enjoy the rest of the fair.”

“I will now,” said Gurglefin, grabbing the stick and wandering away happily. Mmmmmmmm. This was the best cotton candy he’d ever tried. It smelled fantastic, tasted even better, and sounded like . . .

Hang on. It sounded like a clock. Since when did cotton candy tick?

No, Gurglefin realized with a start. It sounds like a bomb!

“Oh my Cod!” Gurglefin exclaimed, suddenly holding the treat at arm’s length. “My cotton candy is going to explode!”

What was he saying? Of course it wasn’t going to explode. It was cotton candy. Ticking cotton candy, yes, but candy doesn’t generally explode in your face. Does it? Gurglefin laughed at his own panic. What a silly sardine he was.

Then he remembered Madame Destiny’s words: “You’ll come to a sticky end!”

Gurglefin screamed, and the cotton candy went bang in his face.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about!” Terrafin the dirt shark punched the air as he appeared in the middle of Professor Puck’s Fantastic Fairy Fair. Behind him, Sonic Boom and Hot Dog also flashed into existence, deposited in the middle of the field by one of Master Eon’s magical Portals. Usually the sudden arrival of a walking shark, a griffin, and a flaming lava hound would have drawn a crowd, but here they were just one wondrous sight among many. Not that Terrafin minded—the dirt shark had been looking forward to this for a long time.

Terrafin, like his two companions, was a Skylander—a sworn protector of Skylands, a vast realm of floating islands and endless skies. Recruited by Eon, greatest of the Portal Masters, the Skylanders spent their days defending the vulnerable, fighting the forces of Darkness, and generally being pretty amazing. But today was special. Today they were getting a day off! The last few months had been crazy. Their archenemy—the evil Portal Master known as Kaos—had been trying to find an ancient artifact called the Mask of Power. Long ago, the mask had been split into eight segments and scattered throughout Skylands, but now Kaos was trying to put it back together. He had one segment, but the Skylanders had found two others. No one really knew what would happen if Kaos completed the mask, as the secrets of its true power had been lost in the mists of time. But the Skylanders didn’t want to find out. Kaos was bad enough on his own. Kaos with a super-duper mystical object from the dark times was too much to even think about.

But for today, Terrafin didn’t have to worry about evil Portal Masters, ancient magical artifacts, or even the safety of Skylands. Today, all Terrafin and his Skylander buddies had to worry about was having fun with a capital F-U-N!

“Test your strength!” bellowed a voice nearby. “Make the bell ring and claim your prize!”

Terrafin’s toothy grin spread even wider. Test your strength? No problem. He was so brawny that even his biceps had biceps. Flexing his muscles, the dirt shark hurried over to the strong-man stall.

“Hey,” Terrafin said, brandishing a gold coin. “I’d like a try!”

“Certainly, sir,” the dog-faced carnival barker said, regarding the Skylander with shifty eyes. “If you could just wait your turn?”

In front of the Skylander, a tiny Mabu was struggling to lift a massive, oversize hammer.

“That’s it,” the carnival barker said with a sneer. “Hit the target and ring that bell.”

Hit the target? It was all the Mabu could do to pick up the hammer. Finally, with a grunt, the little fellow managed to swing the thing over his head. It thudded onto the base of the Test Your Strength machine . . . but the bell didn’t ring. In fact, the marker that was supposed to shoot up to the bell didn’t even budge.

The carnival barker snickered at the disappointed Mabu.

“Never mind. Better luck next time.”

Read this if you've given in to the poor reviews

Some people are posting poor reviews based on the "complicated" recipes.... Perhaps if you have never ever cooked or meal prepped before they can be slightly daunting (and that's a stretch). However, they really aren't much different than other recipes you'd find in weight loss books. I have completed two week's worth of meal preps and each prep has taken less than two hours, but has saved me SO much time throughout the week.

In regards to the shopping lists and daily menus: YOU DON'T HAVE TO FOLLOW THEM EXACTLY! They actually state in the book (pg.72) that you can create your own menus and recipes and that theirs are guidelines/suggestions. They even include a brief 100-calories food list to make it easy to pair foods together. You don't have sprouts in your cupboard? Then move on to a different recipe. You don't like mushrooms? Don't use them. In my two weeks of meal preps I have not followed a single day to the tee, and have really only used six of the recipes (a couple of which I tweaked).

The whole point of the book is encourage the reader to think about their weight loss as a transformation of the body AND mind and that it's not simply a diet to get to your goal but then turn back to old habits.

If you're very rigid and take everything you read literally, then this might not be the book for you. However, if you are able to use the text as a roadmap, and be flexible and creative, then give it a try.

I have been following Chris and Heidi Powell's carb cycling diet for almost a year now. I have lost 75 pounds in 9 months and am in line for a loss of 100 pounds by my year mark. I have met Chris and Heidi Powell in person, as I was nearly cast for Extreme Weightloss before the show was cancelled, and they are genuine in wanting to help people lose weight.

I thought there was some good info here. I'm coming into it already pretty active (lots of HITT workouts) and very knowledgeable about nutrition, very clean eating. But for some reason over the last year, I gained weight instead of losing (no budge on body fat either). Because I have thyroid disease, I figured that was why. I have altogether, just about 15lbs to lose (but more like 8lbs of fat to lose and like 10 lbs of muscle to gain?).. so I thought this might be just the thing to get me jump started with results.

So I read the book, read the recipes and took what I wanted from there. I don't like that so much of the recipes are "sugar free this and fat free that".. I'd rather do this with a more whole foods approach. Also, they suggest that 1400-1500 cals is appropriate for a woman which I think is way too generic. So again, I took in all the info and tweaked it to fit my own approach. So I've been doing probably 4-5 low carb days following by 1-2 higher carb days.. One thing I noticed was bfast was usually something in the moderate carb range where dinners were usually much more lean. So I kept that model and also figured that they were using roughly 25%carbs on low carb days. So again, I borrowed what I knew would work for me. I mean, the best diet is whatever you stick with, right?

SO, after a year of very slow weight gain and not much movement in body fat.. how did I do in the 6 weeks since buying this and implementing it? Well, I've lost 6 pounds and increased my strength gains at the gym. I'm calling that a big fat win. I love that it's a fairly slow and steady loss. I'm almost shocked every time I step on the scale and see a slight dip.. after a year of seeing the number creep up (whether I was eating 1400cals a day or 2000 cals a day) seeing it go in the right direction and knowing I'm eating the best foods for me (still very very clean, no "sugar free fat free" just real foods, mostly those with no ingredients lists.. best feeling ever.

Now, I also read about the macros (if it fits your macros) on their website.. how she eats a marshmallow dream bar from Starbucks everyday.. I sort of file my low carb and high carb days along with the if it fits your macros. Which feels much more "livable". So I get to have my own treats, while still maintaining my clean eating the rest of the time, doing well at the gym and feeling more energized.

Is it a one-sized fits all? Nope.. but I thought there were some great points in here and definitely a great starting point for anyone wanting to try something new.

This two-volume set (see Volume 1: The Gothic Tradition) by David Punter is more than simply a history of the gothic form in American and British literature. It's an ambitious attempt to redefine the word gothic so that it encompasses most of fantastic fiction and film for the past 200 years under a unifying theme: a preoccupation with fear. This is, of course, an extremely broad definition, so don't be surprised if you find yourself taking the theoretical sections of the book with a grain of salt. Also, since the book was first written in the late 1970s, much of the discussion of language and symbol relies on rather outdated Marxist and Freudian theories. Punter apologizes for the latter in the preface to this (the second) edition, saying that rather than doing a massive revision, he decided to "leave it largely as an 'unrestored' period piece, with its own characteristic style, silhouette, and mood"--while adding additional material on the contemporary gothic.

Those caveats aside, however, The Literature of Terror is mostly successful as a comprehensive study. And it's an enormously useful reference for anyone with a more than passing interest in horror literature. Plus it benefits from being the work of a single author: Punter is an extremely well-read scholar who perceives fascinating connections between a wide variety of books and films, and he explains his ideas lucidly enough that you can judge for yourself how far you agree with them.

Some of the high points are Punter's overview of what the word gothic means in other fields (such as architecture); his summaries of the roles of graveyard poetry, the sentimental novel, and the theory of the sublime in the development of the gothic concept; and his inclusion (as gothic and even horror writers) of such notables as Isak Dinesen, William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, J.G. Ballard, Angela Carter, Thomas Hawkes, and Robert Coover. If that's not enough to tempt you, the footnotes and bibliography alone offer ample yet well-chosen pointers to authors whose entertaining fiction you may not have discovered yet.

Best of all, The Literature of Terror is written in English--that is, not loaded down with annoying words such as transgressive and trope that mar so much of postmodern criticism. You can browse for information about specific authors or dip into it at your leisure without losing the thread. And for an academic work, it's darn fun to read. The text was originally published in 1980 to wide acclaim and following its publication, critical interest in gothic writing has risen substantially. This long awaited second edition has been expanded to take into account the latest critical research, and is now published in two volumes.

Volume One covers the period from 1765 to the Edwardian age while Volume Two discusses modern gothic, starting with the 'decadent' gothic writing of Oscar Wilde and continuing through the twentieth century. David Punter's thorough analysis places gothic writing within its historical and sociological context. A new chapter on post-war fiction and film extends the scope of the original study, exploring the development of a contemporary 'culture of horror' and showing the continuing relevance of the Gothic as a means of expression. This new edition also contains a new chapter which analyses the relationship between cultural material and sociopathic behaviour, offering an important contribution to contemporary sociological debate.

Edwina Kidd, Emerita Professor of Cariology, King's College London, London, UK,Ole Fejerskov, Professor Emeritus, Institute of Biomedicine, Aarhus University, Aarhus, Denmark

Edwina Kidd is Emerita Professor of Cariology at King's College, London. She qualified at the Royal Dental Hospital, London, in 1967. Although she was a teacher of Conservative Dentistry, her research interests have been in cariology. She has published extensively in research journals and lectured worldwide. She is author of Essentials of Dental Caries, editions of Pickard's Manual of Operative Dentistry (Oxford University Press) and is co-editor of Dental Caries (Wiley-Blackwell) with Ole Fejerskov and Bente Nyvad. Her principal aim in teaching and writing has been to base the practice of Conservative Dentistry on the science of Cariology.


Ole Fejerskov is Emeritus Professor at Institute of Biomedicine, Aarhus University. Professor Fejerskov has completed honorary Doctoral degrees at universities in Goteborg, Oslo, Oulo, Montpellier, Beijing, Chengdu and Shanghai. He has been Professor and chair of the Department of Dental Pathology, Operative Dentistry and Endodontics at the Royal Dental College Aarhus for 20 years, and Dean for over 8 years.
Ole Fejerskov has written and edited 10 international books, and over 400 papers on dental caries and fluorides, and was editor-in-chief of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, an international dental journal, for 10 years. He is also a visiting professor in France, Australia, Japan and Singapore, and has completed extensive epidemiological studies on oral health in East Africa, and China.

Overview of 3D technology in 2010 - status and trends

"3D Video Technologies: An Overview of Research Trends" is very well named. Written in 2010 and released early in 2011, this book summarizes the current status of 3D technology, including stereoscopic video, holograms, volumetric 3D video, no-glasses stereoscopic video and no-glasses multiview video. This is a much wider scope than just the 3DTV you see in movie theaters today, however most of those other technologies are not available to the average consumer. The book identfies the key research organizations and examines all components of the deployment chain: 3D cameras, 2D to 3D conversion, how to represent 3D in a file, encoding, trasnmission, transmission errors, and displays. Each of these topics is covered lightly -- this isn't the book to go to for details -- but there are also a lot of references that could be pursued. The author also summarizes research currently underway and likley future research trends. I found this book easy to understand and a relatively quick read, both of which are positive attributes when trying to understand a very large and complex body of research.

The author's bias is that 3D is wonderful and will take over our video watching media in the near future, and that the internet will replace over-the-air broadcast, satelite, cable and the like. The book barely touches on physiological problems resulting from watching 3DTV, and does not opine on whether or not consumers want 3D. I am more of a sceptic myself, and I would have appreciated a bit more explorations into the negative aspects of 3DTV.

This book provides an excellent introduction to 3D Video. It gave me a large picture, including ambiguities surrounding the current status that are not otherwise obvious. If you enjoy this book, you might also appreciate, 3D Television (3DTV) Technology, Systems, and Deployment: Rolling Out the Infrastructure for Next-Generation Entertainment, which takes a more detailed and technical approach but is more difficult to read.
