Stands on Its Own

First, if you've read Michael's autobiography he published shortly after Athens Olympics, this isn't book's sequel. It doesn't claim to be, but you may think it is if you look through chapters' headings, as they're based on all events Michael swam in Beijing (autobiography as it is published now stops pretty much shortly after Athens). What that means is that some of the stories are repeated, but if you keep that in mind and ignore it, you'll enjoy all the new stories he shares.

As a former college swimmer and now a masters swimmer I really enjoyed this book and had a hard time putting it down. It's well written, and gives you an idea of what it takes to get to the level that Michael is at. He's obviously gifted with a body well suited for swimming, but it was 99% hard work and effort that got him to the top where no other swimmer have been before. He tells you how he got there while also sharing other stories about his life outside of the pool.

This book also provides a chance for Michael to tell you more about Beijing experience. He was too busy during the Olympics to sit down and give a lengthy interview, and in a way, this is what this book is all about. For example, 12,000 calories a day diet that everyone talked about is actually a myth.

What always impressed me about Phelps was his focus and determination on staying on top of his goals. I have no idea how he was able to remain focused and execute to perfection every single stroke and turn in 17 races he participated in Beijing. In this book he shares how you can overcome distractions and remain motivated to reach your goals.

Finally, if you're into setting any kinds of goals in life, this book is a must read.

Not an autobiography

I am listening to the audio version of this book narrated by Holter Graham. I am really enjoying it but it did take me a while to get used to the format. Phelps and Abrahamson skip around a lot, but you have to realize this isn't Phelps' autobiography. It isn't "Then when I was 14, I tried out for the Sidney Olympics." There's no "This one time, in band camp..." moment. The chapters are headed with words like "Perseverance" and "Redemption" and the authors use Michael's various races to illustrate their point.

That said, there are a LOT of stats and figures and it is hard to keep them all straight, especially in an audio book. But it's really fun to find a particular race on YouTube and then watch it while listening to Michael (via Graham) narrate what is going on.

To those who say Abrahamson wrote the whole book, I say, "Funny I didn't see him in the pool. How does he know that Phelps was smiling to himself underwater on the final turn of the 200 Free in Melbourne?" It may be Abrahamson's words, but it is Phelps' voice. I gave it four stars because really nothing besides "To Kill a Mockingbird" gets five from me. OK, maybe "Kite Runner."

Frankincense the GoTo Essential Oil!

In recent years I have become obsessed with the scent of the essential Oil, Frankincense and after reading this sweet little book, I now know why! The book talks strictly about Frankincense, its history, the making of it, and its use as an outstanding essential oil... It is truly an amazing essential oil and really does smell Divine... I often wondered why it was given to Jesus by the three Wise Men at the time of his birth... I now know why. This book was valuable in explaining its use and its importance to humanity... It is truly the GoTo essential oil of the times... and from what I have read in the book, of all time... Get the book if you Love Frankincense, it is worth it!

I will use this book as a reference book for frankincense. Many good ideas and researched based protocols. As a wellness advocate I plan on using the face cream recipe as a "make and take " class.

Great resource for tour guides!

Joemy Wilson has written a wonderful resource for tour guides. Her short book is filled with the characteristics needed by guides who want to give the best experience possible to the travelers they assist.

As the author points out, it is often the best guides who have been guiding for many years that fall into traps and make mistakes that spoil the travelers' experiences. Because of that, this book, which is appropriate for both new guides and the very experienced ones - and for tour directors as well, serves to remind those of us in the guide business just how to make sure that our guests have the trip of a lifetime!

Great book for efficiently learning excel

Great way to get up to speed quickly
Every chapter comes with spread sheets for quickly duplicating everything in the book
Lots of good review questions at the end of the book
Teaches and reinforces efficient ways of solving practical business problems

Cons:
Incredible amount of typos for a second edition
Kindle version doesn't include an index with page numbers - so its useless

This is the second version of Gottieb's very popular book teaching excel to business and finance professionals. I spent about a week 4-5 hours a day working through this book in conjunction with the downloadable excel files going through it chapter by chapter. It was time well spent and my excel skills improved dramatically.

I found the reviews of the first version of this book to be right on. The author does do a great job of painlessly teaching the information. True power users will likely learn something new but may find some of the information to be too basic.

The biggest problem with the old version is still here. Surprisingly, this updated edition is still filled with lots of typos, errors in spreadsheets and a few incorrect answers which seems to get worse towards the end of the book.

For example, figure 29.7 contains formulas that omit the last row. The screen shot in excel even points this out and includes the warning indicator that the formula is missing adjacent cells - i.e., the missing row. Chapter 29 question #6 option #3 asks the reader to calculate the IRR for a situation with an initial investment of 300,000 to gain 450,000 at the end of year 3. My excel spreadsheet and an online calculator indicates the correct answer to be 14.47% but the book says 7.46%.

I would guess I probably spent an extra 5-6 hours overall from double checking and reviewing stuff due to the errors in the book. For some readers this won't be a big deal. However, for those of us meticulously going through every exercise in the book it does get quite tiresome after awhile.

So why did I give it 4 stars and not a lower score? It really is organized incredibly well and laid out in a way that makes it easy to rework the problems and integrate the most efficient process for solving a range of typical business problems. I had tried other well reviewed books previously but found some of them took too much time and effort trying to figure out what the author was trying to teach and then to learn how to do it in the spreadsheet. As a result, I never got very far using those books.

In this book, the author includes hundreds of well thought out screen shots with arrows and inserted notes pointing out where the reader should be looking, what exactly they should be clicking and how to perform the new skill as effortlessly as possible. Yes, it is more expensive compared to other books teaching similar skills but far less time is wasted learning the new skills.

Other notes:
I used the kindle version on my Nexus 7 and found it typical of most kindle version textbooks. Most of the graphs were easy to read requiring no extra zooming, there are no page numbers in the table of contents but does contain active links and the index is useless containing neither page numbers nor active links.

This book is specifically for Excel versions 2007 and 2010 with extra material for Mac's excel 2011 and excel 2003. I started the book using my old copy of excel 2007. However, once I saw a few cool newer options that wasn't in my version I decided to try excel 2013 via the free trial as this was going to be my one chance to really spend lots of time learning excel so might as well try to be up to date. This worked out very well and the book was still very easy to follow. I'll most likely continue the Office 365 subscription as its clearly better than my old version.

Good for beginers

Gave this to new grads in my office who started working right out of college. The reason I picked this is because the content was basic and did not require any prior knowledge of excel. By the end of going through this book, the person got the hang of excel which was the whole purpose of the exercise.

If you already work with excel, then this book is probably not for you. I will suggest it for beginners. (I work with excel on a daily basis constructing complicated financial models, so my definition of basic might be a bit high, but you can judge the level of this book by using the free previews). Intermediate and advanced users can probably still pick up a few new tricks from this book.

As an MBA graduate in a tuff job market, any little advantage helps. Knowing excel is a huge advantage and this book helped me become more comfortable and more efficient with the program. Besides some typos, the book was everything I hoped it would be.

About the Author
Alexander J. S. Colvin is Associate Professor, Labor Studies and Industrial Relations, Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University in 1999 and his LL.B. from the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in 1992. His current research includes examination of the impact of restructuring in the telecommunications industry on the work organization and employment conditions of employees and managers.

Easy to use and find key terms!

I liked this book. It was a well wriiten text with minimal typos which I found to be uncommon lately. All the key terms were bold throughout the reading and easy to find. It also has a dictionary in the back for key terms which many newer text books no longer have. If you are looking for information fast, this is the book for you! Very easy to use!
