About the Author

Joe O'Mahoney is Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Business School and a Fellow of the CIPD. Prior to this he was Lecturer in Organization and Technology at Lancaster University. Joe has held a number of positions in industry including the role of Senior Business Consultant at 3G Mobile where he was involved with the start up of the company. Joe was also Director and Co-founder of Stay Mobile, Technology Ltd, a company that develops and leases a product for recharging mobile phones in public places. Joe's areas of expertise are change management and consultancy, including innovation and entrepreneurship, cultural change, new product development, and systems design.

Calvert Markham is the Managing Director of Elevation Learning, the leading educator of consultancy practitioners and Visiting Professor in the Practice of Management Consultancy at Cass Business School. Calvert has held the post of President of the Institute of Consulting and Vice Chairman of the global consultancy institute, the ICMCI. He has authored several books on the consultancy industry, with a specific interest in practitioner skills and is a visiting professor at Cass Business School.

A timely warning about technology out of control

Dr. Ho has written a very important book that addresses in understandable language the threat posed by the alliance of corporations and technologists. She attacks shoddy science put to the use of corporate profit and shows that the potential threat of this poorly controlled technology is enormous. Transgenic disease, massive food crop failures and the potential for racist eugenics are only part of what she covers. The fact that corporations based in the industrial north can exclusively patent and control native plants that have existed for millenia under new laws is an appalling fact that could potentially turn all societies into forced consumers of corporately owned products that were previously freely available to all. This is a broadly based argument that addresses issues far beyond the laboratory and the board room and brings into question many of the presumptions we have about science, economics, medicine and ownership of the world's resources. An important book!

A far more important book than its title indicates

While Dr. Ho's book is indeed a warning about the hazards and inequities involved in uncontrolled and exploitative genetic engineering, it is also one of the most incisive and well-informed critiques of the orthodox neo-Darwinian model of evolution by chance mutation and natural selection, addressing head-on the popular myths propagated by writers such as Jacques Monod, Richard Dawkins and Daniel Dennett. Ho's conception of evolution as a global organismic process rather than a gradual, random, piece-by-piece accretion is firmly founded on scientific evidence rather than on dogma and suggests the possibility of integrating such a view with one in which the entire universe has conspired to produce and sustain life. It has been fifty years since Monod pronounced the doctrine that evolution is "absolutely free but blind." The very notion of directed or adaptive mutations has been too long regarded as heresy by neo-Darwinists and it is refreshing to hear a scientist of Ho's stature embracing and presenting the evidence for it.

Surprisingly insightful and useful. My daughter and I both loved it!

I live in the US and bought this for my daughter. The first few pages from the `parental part' is about being sure you picked the right school. That wasn't so helpful for me as it focused on the UK education system, but the rest of the book was fantastic. The section on emotional intelligence made me realize I've been blabbing on for too long without helping my child develop her own emotional awareness. A useful eye opener.

I loved the bit which helped my daughter find out her learning style (not something I have seen schools ever do)! I'd recommend for anyone with a child nearing school moving age.

It is aimed squarely at the specialists but generalists such as GPs or specialists in other but related disciplines would also find this book a good reference source. I also liked the principal that associated non respiratory problems are covered in detail. Take for example, Sarcoidosis, which has always been classified as a chest disease but is also a multi-system disease. The chapter on Sarcoidosis is an excellent review of the whole topic and not just the pulmonary aspects. In addition, there are excellent chapters on issues that you don't always find such as air pollution high altitude and diving medicine. Importantly the book is readable, and relevant to physicians and adopts a well rounded approach to informing the doctor what he or she needs to know. The depth of detail achieved is just right and this book has an encyclopedic feel to it. Well written.

I am a pulmonary/cc fellow and have been using this book as my primary text. It is wonderfully written with good clear explanations and sufficiently detailed without being cumbersome. It gives an excellent overview of all the topics. It is filled with illustrations, graphs and tables that improve the readability of the text. Many of the chapters are written by authors that are world reknowned in their fields. The only complaint I have is for a work of this magnitude it has several grammatical errors. Almost every other page! That is why 4 stars.

About the Author

Writer, historian, and activist Rebecca Solnit is the author of eighteen or so books on feminism, western and indigenous history, popular power, social change and insurrection, wandering and walking, hope and disaster, including the books Men Explain Things to Me and Hope in the Dark, both also with Haymarket; a trilogy of atlases of American cities; The Faraway Nearby; A Paradise Built in Hell: The Extraordinary Communities that Arise in Disaster; A Field Guide to Getting Lost; Wanderlust: A History of Walking; and River of Shadows, Eadweard Muybridge and the Technological Wild West (for which she received a Guggenheim, the National Book Critics Circle Award in criticism, and the Lannan Literary Award). A product of the California public education system from kindergarten to graduate school, she is a columnist at Harper's and a regular contributor to the Guardian.

Mandatory reading: An explanation for why men need to join (but not replace) women in the feminist movement.

I preordered this book with high expectations, having recently finished Men Explain Things To Me. And let me say: It surpassed them! This book is a phenomenal look into how men need to (also) be feminists. What I especially appreciated about this book is that it was even more aware of intersectionality and privilege than Men Explain Things To Me. Solnit shows much more awareness and appreciation for not only race, sex, cisgender, sexual orientation, class, age, religion, etc. ... she also calls out how these combine and interact. Another thing I like is how surprisingly relevant the book is, making references to occurrences as recent as Donald Trump's "Grab them by the pussy" comment.

Now, I do not want to call this a flawless book. Remember, it is a collection of essays, and while they generally build upon each other, you might get to the end of the book and think, "What kind of ending was that?" I found the first half of the book especially exceptional, with the second half being still great, but not *as* great, especially with final chapter. But Solnit, as always, is a magician with her writing, and will take you on a meandering, but laser-focused, journey through modern-day feminism.

This is an advanced, technical work written by a leading theoretician. McClelland examines motivation in the personality and behaviorist traditions. He focuses on the dimensions of personality which drive behavior: achievement, power, affiliative, and avoidance motives. This work explores motivation in the context of trends in society, cognitive effects, values and skills, and training. Provides an enormous bibliography. This work is a classic and deserves careful reading by anyone deeply interested in the subject of motivation. Highly recommended!

McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though

Actually, I, Joe, purchased the book, not Julie. McClelland is especially known for research on achievement motivation, but I was interested in his approach to motivation overall. The book is largely a survey of different approaches to studying motivation; it is written as a textbook. There is also another book on human motivation edited by McClelland that is a collection of articles written by various authors including McClelland. This is not that book. McClelland's research approach is better reflected in his journal articles though.

About the Author
A. K. Ramanujan (1929–1993) was born Attipat Krishnaswami Ramanujan in Mysore, India, the second of six children. A Tamil Brahmin of the Sri Vaishnava caste, Ramanujan grew up speaking Tamil, English, Sanskrit, and Kannada. He was educated at Mysore University and the Deccan College in India and at Indiana University, where he received a Ph.D. in linguistics, his thesis later published as a monograph titled A Generative Grammar of Kannada. A poet in English and Kannada, a translator from Kannada and Tamil, as well as a scholar, folklorist, philologist, playwright, and essayist, Ramanujan, as Wendy Doniger once wrote, “blazed a great path through the center of Indological studies. He gave us so many new paradigms that no Indologist can now think about India without thinking through his thoughts.” Ramanujan served on the University of Chicago faculty for thirty-two years and was a professor in the Department of Linguistics and of South Asian Languages and Civilizations. His accidental discovery of an anthology of classical Tamil poems in the uncatalogued basement stacks of the university’s Harper Library led to The Interior Landscape. In 1976 the Government of India bestowed the title of Padma Shri, one of its most prestigious civilian awards, upon Ramanujan for his contributions to Indian literature and linguistics, and in 1983 he received a MacArthur Fellowship. A.K. Ramanujan’s many publications include The Collected Poems of A.K. Ramanujan, The Collected Essays of A.K. Ramanujan, Folktales from India, Speaking of Siva, and Nammalvar: Hymns for the Drowning.
