Nobody's Angel (A Willow Park Romance), by Sarah Hegger

In this evocative new series from author Sarah Hegger, a woman returns home after a long absence--and wonders if two wrongs really can make a right. . .

Nine years ago Lucy Flint ran away to Seattle, taking her friend's boyfriend and leaving her high school sweetheart without a word of explanation. Now she's back in Willow Park, Illinois, to help care for her ailing father--and it's no surprise that her ex, Dr. Richard Hunter, is still angry.

Still, she's a different Lucy now. Sober, wiser, ready to make amends to the long--make that very long--list of those she mistreated during her wild younger days. Falling for Richard all over again would mean wreaking havoc in both their lives and possibly squandering her opportunity for redemption. But here, in the place where everything went wrong, is the one person who always felt right, and a second-chance that could be the best mistake she ever made. . .

“Sarah Hegger's voice is rich and witty and in a word, addictive.”--Terri Osburn, author of the bestselling Anchor Island series

Hard to put this book down!
By Carole Wooten
4 Stars!

Sometimes I like to go into a book completely blind as I did with this book. I really had absolutely no idea what to think about this book before I started reading it. I haven't read anything by this author before reading this book and I am not even sure that I read the blurb before I signed up for the blog tour. I think my entire decision to read this book came from the fact that it is start of a new series and I liked the cover. I hate to admit that I often make a decision to read a book based on the cover despite the fact that I can still hear my mother telling me to "never judge a book by its cover" many times during my childhood.

I knew that this was a romance and I really expected it to be of the light and fluffy variety that I seem to be reading a lot lately. Imagine my surprise when this book turned out to be anything but light and fluffy. I didn't realize this book would focus on such difficult issues and I found myself really sucked into the story quite quickly. I really had a hard time even putting this book down for even a minute. There was just something about Lucy that really got to me.

Lucy is a recovering alcoholic and she has returned home to Willow Park to help her mother and face her past. Lucy was a wild teenager and has quite the reputation in her hometown which is why she hasn't been back since the day she left so many years ago. Lucy has changed and wants to help her mother deal with her father. She also wants to make amends for all the harm she has caused in this town as part of her recovery.

Richard is the boy that Lucy loved during her teen years. She broke his heart when she left town with someone else nine years ago. Richard is now a doctor and he actually treats Lucy's parents among others. He bought the house next door to her parents and even shovels their driveway. Richard is simply a nice guy.

I really connected with Lucy in this book. I made a few decisions as a teen that I am not proud of and I couldn't imagine what it would be like to still be facing judgement for them today. Lucy didn't try to make excuses and was willing to take responsibility for her actions. The more I learned about Lucy the more I liked her. I really liked Richard in this book as well. He was obviously crushed when Lucy left and he still carries a lot of anger and feeling for her.

There were a couple of things that I did have some issues with in this book. I really wish that Richard's divorce had been final before the story started. At the beginning of the story he was still trying to make his marriage work. Even though his wife had left and didn't want to reconcile, I still don't care the idea that he was still married. The other issue that I had was Lucy's parents. They were both just really horrible people. I can completely understand how Lucy would have looked for attention outside of the home during her teen years. I think that these two characters were a bit overdone in this story and they became hard to read about. There were just too many scenes that focused on her horrible parents for my taste.

I really found this to be a wonderful book. I was able to put my two issues aside and really enjoy the story for what it was. Nothing in this book was expected and I loved that. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a contemporary romance that deals with some tougher issues. This is the first book by Sarah Hegger that I have read and I look forward to reading the next book in this series as soon as possible.

I received a copy of this book from Kensington Publishing Group - Zebra via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

A real romance for real lovers
By Vicki
It's not too often that you find a romance novel that's alive with real characters, with flaws and all. This book is a perfect example of what honest-to-goodness contemporary romance should be, and I can't wait to see what Ms. Hegger has for us next.

I loved Lucy's character. She was strong, determined, and brave. She faced her demons and grew up, never blaming the world for anything. She's a wonderful example of how strength comes from within. Richard is an equally flawed, but worthy hero. His flaw, if anything, is that he's too trusting, which means when he's hurting, it's hard for him to forgive. But Richard and Lucy belong together. They make each other stronger, more fun, more human.

Often in romance novels I find myself getting annoyed by little things, small inconsistencies that stack together to drive me bonkers. This book had none of that. NONE! Why? Because the author stayed true to life. What a breath of fresh air. Keep it up Ms. Hegger!

Nobody's Angel is probably one of the most depressing books I have read for a while, and unnecessarily so if I am being totally honest. I was ready to call time on this book at around the 40% mark, but I stuck with it as I was really hoping that out of all the dull, nasty, abhorrent and un-savoury characters in the book, there would be at least one positive to add to the flickering candle that was Lucy Flint, and the only reason I really liked her was because she had pretty much dumped on everyone else in the book before she had left town 9 years previously, and they all by the behavior displayed in this book pretty much deserved it. The last 5% offers a little hope, but not enough for me to rate it any higher than I have.

She was alive and she was living each day as it came.

For me this book had two stories running through it, one of positivity, of a woman returning home, trying to repair the damage from her past and right the wrongs with the people she left behind, this is the story I wanted to read, was expecting to read. It was overshadowed by the family drama, most of which I finished the book feeling was unresolved and unexplained, Lucy returns home at her mothers request, as her father is ill.

Quite frankly, her parents, were losers of the highest order, its not often I feel that strongly or vehemently about my elders (yes even in books, I want to be able to respect them) but Carl was a nasty, vitriolic, poisonous man, his illness, whatever it was, was never really clarified, so I felt absolutely no sympathy for him. Lynne, her mother, was a spineless, weak, pitiful creature, and basically happy to blame Lucy for her problems, but when offered plausible solutions, preferred to stick her head in the sand and blame Lucy for stirring up trouble, after she was the one who asked her to return home.

These are my main issues, I could go on, I am not going too, this book has in the main garnered positive reviews. I wish I could be giving one, but I really feel this book lost the point of what is should have been offering. The writing is sound, the characters for the most part un-likeable, the story line had plenty going on in it, but each new element that the author added to it just muddied the flow of the important tropes further and didn't really offer the deeper development I wanted in the areas that I thought really mattered.

It was pretty much one nasty occurrence, followed by a horrible encounter after another and Lucy's flame was pretty much extinguished and stamped out by the end of the book, the rebuilding of her relationship with Richard should have been front and center, and it got lost in all the other stuff going on. A shame as the premise really intrigued me, restitution for past wrongs was what I was looking for, not a witch hunt and unrelenting verbal beat down's, which is what I got.

ARC generously provided via Netgalley, I am sorry I cannot offer a more positive review on this occasion.
