How to teach music using Gordon and Orff at the same time

I have taken classes in Orff Schulwerk and Gordon's Music Learning Theory - both systems have excellent techniques to strengthen a child's musical independence and understanding, yet are fundamentally different in some ways. I've been looking for a way to combine the strong points of each system and this book has been infinitely helpful to do just that. The strong point of Orff Schulwerk is the wonderfully varied and versatile system of experiencing music holistically through speech, movement, singing, and Orff instruments, highlighting the children's own creativity and improvisation. The strong point of Gordon is that he uses music in different tonalities and modes from the beginning and develops a child's sense of melody and harmony much earlier, which improves a child's musical hearing, understanding and enjoyment of singing. He also uses rhythm solfege based on the beat function system, which has advantages over other systems. Gordon himself always said that his theories are not a method and no matter what pedagogy one uses, one can add in his music learning theories to enhance what the students are already doing. Because I work in a school that has no instruments, I am not able to fully realize the educational ideas that are a part of Orff's system. Gordon's theories have 50 years of research behind them and are so central to developing young musicians, I think a new way is being paved in music education. Ms. Lange's book presents ways to combine both of these excellent systems in a way that stays true to the essence of each system and highlights the commonalities while reconciling the differences. Kudos to her!

Orff Meets Gordon

Diane Lange, a music professor at UTA, has written a concise and practical exposition on combining two effective approaches to music teaching and the result is a balanced approach that builds up the weak spots in both. This is a book that should be read by teachers who are familiar with at least one of these approaches. That is the ideal, but Ms Lange provides detailed lesson plans that are clear enough for any music teacher to use. The lesson plans alone are worth the price of the book. The history and theory included provide the foundation to build your own plans in a logical, effective manner. Orff and Gordon's Music Learning Theory is the combination that will be taught and practiced in the future. Try it and you'll never be happy with the single approach.
